So imagine my excitement when I stumbled across some Natsume fanart that was was utterly *SPARKLY* on pixiv - I litterly went "EEEE!"....and hand flailing might have been involved too ^^ Then I went hunting for more.
Here are the fruits of my labor for your eyecandy!pleasure XD As always, click to go to the original post on pixiv and to view the full resolution there:
Episode 2: Korra's Voice actress is much better in this episode and I like the way Bolin and Mako are introduced. I continue to be charmed by Tenzin (especially when he ends up cheering the Fire Ferret's win). I find it interesting that despite the wins, Mako is NOT happy so I wonder if there are other forces pressuring him to compete and win the tournament. Pro-
I have to admit I saw elements of characters from the first series in our new cast: Korra seems like a blend of Toph and Sokka for instance - she's capable and headstrong but with a definite streak of rebellion and humor. Also, she's willing to say it like it is, whether its necessarily to her benefit or not.
For the brothers, I'm still not really sure yet but....I saw strains of Mai in Mako, in regards to discipline and deadpan humor. He does have a bit of emo-ness which hasn't been explained so right now that is sort of reminiscent of Zuko but that could change. Hard to remember others in their emo-ness as much as Zuko haha.
Bolin might be a blend of Sokka's bad flirting methods and humor (which sorts of explains why he meshes well with Korra) and perhaps Tai Lee ("the avatar!")... still, not sure about that with just one episode to go on...
Sokka's humor was one of the big reason's the first series worked so well, not to mention Toph's kick ass awesomeness and Zuko's emo. Mako's deadpan lines feel like they wanted to bring Mai's strain of humor in too, without the coolness in attitude per se. Can't help think that they noticed what worked previously and brought those bits back in LoK. There's no telling how these characters will develop and in what direction they're headed though - that at least is entirely original and makes for very awesome possibilities...
While I tend to lean towards male protagonist novels, I did post a pinterest board for Female Protagonist Fantasy Novels for my sis (if anyone's interested) - also, if y'all would like invites to the site, just drop me a line.
Recent stuff enjoyed:
- Legend of Korra pilot: the new Avatar series is fantabulous. I especially love how they introduced the newer elements to the world and particularly the musical score - I want to get my hands on all that wonderful music, oh god. I admit I'm hoping we get to see old!Toph at some point in the future XD[like...](Republic city, metal benders. Iman etc.Korra seems to have definite elements of Sokka with a bit of Toph's kick ass awesome too.
The weakest link: I felt the voice actress for Korra could have had more nuance - her delivery of several lines through the pilot felt rather flat. However, the same applied to the original show too, and everyone improved as the series went on :D Still, can't help but wonder how it might have sounded if someone like Azula's VA or Mary Jane's VA (from the Amazing Spider-man cartoon) had the lead role instead... *runs off to watch episode 2*
- The Whitefire Crossing: it was barely a hop, skip and a jump to end up slashing Dev/Kiran through the novel. And Dev being a hot POC character has me all \o\o/o/
- Cinder: excellent world building and I'm intertested in seeing if and how Kai and Cinder's relationship progresses through the books - though I do get that it's more Cinder's journey and growth that's the focus really XD I absolutely adore original adaptations of myths and fairytales and this novel does it brilliantly. Can't wait for the sequel!
- Trailers: Amazing Spider-man | Prometheus | The Avengers | Snow White & The Huntsman | Jack the Giant Killer
- Have mostly caught up with the Naruto manga and I adored the development with the Nine Tails, Minato and Kushina's backstory (the anime episodes had me crying and smiling and crying from the awesome) and Sasuke and Itachi lately...
- The second Sherlock movie was super fun but I found myself far more shippy with the second season of the Sherlock TV series. It's Benedict Cumberbatch's fault. I do want fanfic recs now but have no idea where to start ;_;
Season 3 of Community is a bit of a mixed bag for me - Britta definitely has her shining moments but I'm not getting enough Annie and the latest twist with Troy and Abed has me worried >_>
Next month has the potential to be FABULOUS since two things are scheduled to go up: my gen art commish from pokefreak of Zuko and Toph (and Iroh) and my H/D livelongnmarry high fantasy H/D fic from femmequixotic (which y'all might remember from the commish done by samurai-pet here)
still want futuristic!Draco-on-a-hovercraft fic someday tho *grabby hands*
"Because in many ways, to me, Draco is the hero of the whole saga. I think Harry has his destiny. There is only one choice Harry can make in every situation. Harry makes the right choice always, and he’s admirable for doing so. But Draco has a bunch of choices, and Draco has to break the bonds of the shackles of his past. He has to break the chain of this kind of abuse and hatred and selfishness and entitlement that his father has been part of, and probably his grandfather and stretching back for generations.
And so I saw my job as trying to illustrate how you end up with a kid as messed up as Draco. In “Chamber of Secrets,” I just tried to bully him as much as I could, and be as unloving as I could. And in every opportunity, I wanted to be the kind of father that was so selfish and so egotistical and narcissistic that I would happily sacrifice my son and/or my relationship with him for status. So that was the main point, was to try and explain Draco and make his decision that much more heroic, to try and do the right thing." - Jason Isaacs (source)
( More meta quotes from across the years...Collapse )
"sometimes people not in the ship probably have the wrong idea about just what the trope of that ship is. Or more correctly, I think sometimes people outside a ship underestimate the number of tropes a ship can contain. Like a lot of people assume H/D=enemies trope=hatesex. And plenty of H/D was about that, but not all of it. Not even most of it, in my experience. " - sistermagpie (source)

Thanks to my recent fic!binge that turned into a walk down memory lane - god, why isn't there any H/D post-DH meta, why? - I've gone through my old H/D recs from 5+ years back and I've come to realise that between developments in canon and me no longer being a teen, my tastes have changed...or maybe not so much changed as I find myself unwilling to read fic where there's Hurt and little to no Comfort or just angst angst angst. Powerful Men by frayach is an example of strong writing and extreme angst that has me wincing now where in yesteryears I probably would have been more willing to embrace the darkness.
It seems that while I've always hated death fics, mindfucks or fics that end in betrayals, I used to have a higher tolerance for them. That isn't to say that I don't enjoy Dark fics or those with high doses of angst and omg, the high from a fic with a balance of slash and canon where Harry and Draco are both complete berks to each other is kinda brilliant...
It's just that I've come to the conclusion that following Deathly Hollows, I need a certain kind of Draco and Harry, both of whom grow up and mature ultimately (esp in post epilogue fics) but don't lose that essential self. Harry being a bit dense but still possessing that doggedness and moments where he can go off the handle. Draco, having come into his own but still with a definite bite. And things going pear shaped when they're together.
Compared to pre-DH fanfics, I think the Draco I love is a lot more...grey. Where before I could read a Hero of the War Draco, I now need the one that came out of canon needing to hold onto his family and friends but still unwilling to actively murder someone face to face. Where previously one of the ways to get Harry acknowledge Draco was to put him on a pedestal for having turned spy for the Order and having to kill or sacrifice those who were closest to him because of the line dividing the Order and the DE, I find it almost anathema to me now. I need the Draco who loves his family and his friends, who can't lower his wand necessarily until their safe...yet won't actually kill someone or let them kill someone when its outright murder. I like the balancing act that JKR did with the Malfoys where they weren't actually good or evil but a family and...together.
So while there are fics I used to adore and recced back in '05, I can't embrace them nowadays since events and characters don't ring true anymore. There are exceptions, particularly with crack and AUs (If You've a Ready Mind by Maya for instance) but generally the fics I'd rec to people coming into fandom post series nowadays wouldn't include as many fics pre-DH. It's harder to put my post-HBP hat on or my pre-GoF spectacles and I don't expect non-shippers to find it any easier to swallow generally.
The good thing is that there's quite a bit and quite a few favorite authors are still churning out fic. Then there's femmequixotic whose written more H/D fic after DH was realeased than before and snegurochka_lee and phoenixacid whose constant stream of recs over the years made it easier to locate the ficcy goodness.
Now that I've gone through the bulk of fics from fave fests and authors from recent years though I find myself hunting for newer authors but also more than anything, meta on Draco and H/D post series (most of it seems to be post-HBP or pre-OotP).
I want thoughts of the Malfoys during DH, speculation on post war events (the trials and media and recovery) and the gap between the last chapter and the epilogue and considering the longer life spans of wizards, the possibility of H/D after the war - whether its immedaiate or 19+ years down the road. And I really want meta on Draco, on him not necessarily being a hero but for being human and fleshed out in a way that so many of us wanted see pre-HBP but despaired of ever getting from JKR - re-reading The Gods Themselves by ljash kind of drove that particular point home.
Ok, god, will shut up now. Damn OTP >_<
It helps that certain archives allow you to download multi-chapter fics in one go: Archive of Our Own has the option to load the "entire work" and Hex files has a printable story format. There's also a story export script for ff.net. The only sites that don't make it any easier are skyehawke and LJ :( Still, am glad most fests now host fics on external sites and on a single page.
Working with Chrome, Notepad ++ and Calibre, its easy to convert the fics to epub files with manageable sizes :D And I find I scroll less and read more when I'm on the Nook too XD
Anyway, I've compiled a list of recs under the cut and also updated my old Starter Kit with titles from recent years.
( H/D fic recs this way...Collapse )
Oh and a general shoutout: ADD ME ON GOODREADS - am always looking out for titles to read so the more friends there the better :D
Totally blame the new job - its busy and exhausting but not crazy stressful though the business is undergoing a change in management tomorrow so things are a bit up in the air at the moment.
Have been off the fandom radar for a while - been visiting tumblr but RL eclipsed everything, especially when my wallet, ebook reader and brand new replacement phone (which I hadn't even paid the bill for yet) got frickin' stolen from the office in November. After tears, money and lots of shopping to replace stuff (and trying to figure out which books and android apps to download) I'm sort of back to normal. Still haven't really recovered my ebook library yet though ;_;
On the RL front, it's been a year of highs (new job! family visit! awesome housemates! improved health! growing my hair! great vacations!) and lows (stolen stuff! housemates leaving! tight budgets! exhausting work!) but the year ended on a positive note - Christmas with the housemates and our very own turkey (which I roasted and didn't destroy \o/) donated by our land lady
Fandom-wise, it was a quiet year, shuffling between fandoms (only kept up with watching Community, Big Bang Theory and Modern Family) despite finding new loves early on (Downton Abbey, Tiger & Bunny, The Good Wife) though there were the commissions that kept me going and a recent odd obsession with a Kpop group called T-ARA which I blame on Ham Eunjung. I can trace it all back to the Dream High kdrama, which left me with a lot of mixed feelings but also an urgent need to find out more about the actress playing Baek Hee- it was a downward spiral from that point >_>
I have a feeling RL is still going to eat into most of my fandom time but I'm going to try to keep up with things here in future. It's been 7 years since I got my LJ (New Years Eve 2004) and while we might not share the same fandoms, or maybe read posts on RSS or DW instead, and find our lifstyles and relationships changing too, I'm thankful for the years of friendship and fandom love that's all because of you <3 Happy New Year guys!
- ...it's my birthday tomorrow! Found several online e-clubs that send coupons for your birthday (Baskin Robbins, Blenz, Boston Pizza, Marble Slab Creamery, Starbucks, Vera's Burger Shack etc) so this week is going to be pretty sweet :3
- I have a new job! I also canceled some art commissions that had taken a while and sold some stuff on ebay (sort of an end-of-summer cleaning). Ultimately I'm super happy at the moment that things are working out well and things are coming together.
- Due to budgetary constraints I've been eating less random stuff and since returning from banff last month I've lost 4 kgs o_O That's 1kg (or 2 lbs) a week which had me all shocked and \o/ at the same time. Just 12kgs more to go to reach my highschool graduation weight haha
- The new TV season has started and my fave shows are back - particularly Downton Abbey and Modern Family though I was rather underwhelmed by the season premiere for Community (still have hopes for episode 2!) and I admit I skimmed through Big Bang Theory and Fringe so can't say much yet. Looking forward to the Good Wife tho and am curious about some of the new shows (Once Upon a Time, Grimm, Pan Am, Awake, Smash)
- I got my commish sketch from teat2am of adult!Toph too:

Season 2's premiere had me laughing, crying and squeaking so damn much. Oh man, why can't there be more awesome dramas like this? The depth and complexity in regards to the characters, their relationships and the way events of the period impact their lives...I just have hearts in my eyes right now <3 <3
God damnit, when is episode 2 coming out???
I never expected DA to be this good when I first started it - though I was predisposed towards liking Mary Crawford since I recognized Michelle Dockery from the Discworld Hogfather movie where she plays Susan (Death's granddaughter). I love the richness of Mary as a character - Sybill is easy to like but in many, many ways an innocent. So it's Mary who really owns my heart (as does Anna) and Mr. Bates...oh lordy, I admit I want to shake him and hug him to death at the same time. Really do want to see more of him...
TBH though, each character makes the whole story that much better, so as much as I want to srsly strangle O'Brien and Thomas, their actions give quite a bit of food for thought (the baby!issue in the s1 finale and the lighter!scene in this season's premiere)
In regards to romance, I'm rather invested in Anna and Mr Bates as well as Mary and Mathew though when it comes to Sybill, I'm interested in seeing a bit more character growth. Still, I find it hard to believe that so many things happened in a single episode!Am kinda wondering where the characters will be by the end of the season *flails*
I hope we get to see Gwen at some point in S2 and at least some of the romances working out in the long run. I wonder if the writers might have enough for a third season - on one hand, we'd get MOAR but on the other hand, the wil they/won't they might get overly drawn out. Still I'd cheer like mad if we get more episodes.
Need to find any Downton Abbey comms here now (though I'm already following the tag on tumblr - here are some of the posts I've liked)
P.S - To anyone trying DA for the first time, do NOT watch the PBS version, which is a hackjob - view the the UK broadcast.
Might have ended up more like movie!DM than my Dufour!DM but it was enough for sweet dreams XD
Oh and AM I UR MAN? had me wondering about advertising trends in the Wizarding World - not to mention, Harry's reaction MWHAHAHAHA
While July was mostly a hiatus from the internet, this month had me lurking on LJ, DW and tumblr in particular. My own posts can be found here if anyone is interested. Personally, I find all the shiny on that site is impossible to resist for long. I just wish I could figure out how to locate individuals to follow. Does anyone have any tumblr recs or methods they find successful when it comes to finding tumblrs with similar interests?
I bought henna, amla and indigo online and I'll be trying a two step process to darken my hair to a deep brown (since the current color has copper toned highlights at the moment and I don't want any more damage from hair dye). Oh and my hair has never been longer, woot! I find it a little awkward when sleeping but generally I think my excessive oil production is working out better with the longer locks of hair XD
Last year I tried to be more budget conscious and used the cheapest shampoos I could get my hands on (Suave, Sunsilk etc.) but the damage to my hair from home hair dyes made it necessary to get something better. In the end I picked up a litre of Pureology Repair Shampoo, AG Peppermint Shampoo and Paul Mitchel Super Strong Conditioner during Trade Secrets' half off sale. I could feel the difference from the first shampoo and my hair is so much better now - thank god for MakeupAlley!
Posted a wikipedia userscript to clean up and simplify the site (can be found here) and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out :D
Have been playing badminton and volleyball in the backyard in the evenings and I'm hoping to continue through to the start of Winter (especially since a couple of us want to get more fit) - its so much damn fun! We had our first and last barbecue of the summer the weekend before last and apart from the food, we just kept moving for about 6 hrs -frisbee, volleyball, lacrosse, badminton \o/. The next day it was hard to get out of bed though >_>
How have I lived my life without trying Xiao Long Bao before now? Small morsels of heaven that melt in your mouth - not to mention, following them up with tan tan noodles and much later with gelato is probably my idea of a perfect afternoon now *_*
I've been keeping to a pretty decent regimen of daily face wash, the occasional apricot scrub and a weekly oat and pumpkin seed face mask so I was floored when I tried my housemate's Kiss Me Magical Facial Peeling Gel which cleared off a hell of a lot of dead skin on the sides of my face *_* I admit I kind of want to go to the far east for cosmetics now....
Have switched my reading list to Good Reads (here) and was wondering if any of y'all have lists there? I'm rather in love with the site at the moment so any excuse to open a tab would make me a happy ducky.
Out of all of them, T&B easily has the most eyecandy - especially since the protagonists are not teenagers but rather, 20/30 something adults XD Here are some faves off pixiv (just click to get taken to the original posts and for larger views!):
( eyecandy this way...Collapse )
Community has a super enthusiastic fanbase which is why the campaigning for Troy in this year's FMM led to a surprise win that put a smile on so very many faces - even those who had never watched the show.
But that's 'cause the show itself is awesome - whether its animated gifs and youtube vids directed at the casual internet browser or marathons of the series watched for the umpteenth time *cough-cough-me-cough-cough*, it makes you fall over laughing while also just feeling so darn happy, charmed and in love.
I watched the show at around the end of last year and with every repeat I noticed more cultural references, meta jokes and geek!love. Nowadays I usually play it in the background while on the laptop :D
My favorite characters are Annie, Abed and Troy but its definitely an ensemble!show. Each member of the study group brings something unique. But its also the homages to fandom loves and awesome parodies (so many that you would need to visit tv-tropes' entry to track them all) that make it memorable. Or better yet: CommunityTropes!
The links above offer glimpses of the brillance of this show and I just want to encourage y'all to give it a try. Each of the first nine episodes for season 1 showcases a member of the study group and we see the characters come into their own through to the final episodes of the season, where we get not one, but three different finales: the EPIC paintball war, the spanish final and the end of year dance.
My favorite episodes might actually be in the second season though - a Dungeons & Dragons episode that's pure awesomesauce, a Zombie!Halloween set to ABBA music of all things, and revisiting paintball for a glorious 2 part finale that pays homage to first, ol' Westerns and then Star Wars <3
