yet another post on your flist...

...on the new profile:
  • We will adapt.
  • It's the profile page, not the end of the world.
  • Still, 18+ pages of compaints aren't going to make it go away.
  • Both old and new versions had/have drawbacks. That's life lj for you.
  • At least the profile page is not a WIP of doom and its finally up.
  • Love it or hate it, life moves on.

Generally, I'm much happier with LJ admin/news/heads this year than in the past year or two. At least they're getting things done >_> Am sad the new userpic slots aren't available yet.

Personally I find the new profile more functional (stats, people vs comm filters, '(hidden)' etc.). Gives me an excuse to revamp the bio XD I just like it when sites do revamps (e.g. DeviantART)

ETA: grrliz has an AWESOME post about the new profile that's worth reading.

Son of ETA: If anyone wants a quick glimpse of what the initial beta looked like in July, here and here. You can tell it's definitely changed with time.

Grandchild of ETA: Dug up grrliz's userinfo revamp idea of 2006

They usually implement changes and then announce them (navbar being one example I think) but this time they beta-ed it for several months before implementing it. So the announcement was there in a way, though a lot of peeps didn't really pay attention to the requests for feedback I think...
Even still, if I wanted, I could get rid of the navbar if I didn't like it (I do, by the way). I can't, however change my profile page back, which makes me think that I (we) should have been told immediately beforehand that it was going to happen so I wouldn't be surprised and think that I accidentally turned on Beta testing somehow when I go to my profile and this thing I don't want is there.
I wouldn't mind if the new profile becomes an opt-out user viewing setting so that peeps who want the new profile can use it and those who don't can opt-out.

Most peeps I think weren't even paying attention to the beta option so just thought LJ had sprung this up on them with no warning like with the navbar et all.

Right now I'm happy the beta-ed the feature which is so much better than the past few years with the prev management. And I think they make announcements as they implement changes in the development comm *shrugs* I'd find it worse if they announce something and then it doesn't happen/ or happens differently.
I need them to do it. Otherwise I'm going to be really pissed I succumbed to the last permanent account sale.

In my case, I gave it a try. I just don't like it. And, you know what? It's not all a matter of hating change, either. For instance, I like the Beta testing for account settings just fine. In fact, I love it. That I find to be an improvement.

Like the userpics! Where the hell is the mention of the userpics?
The new servers and data center are an investment in LJ's future; they also offer more immediate benefits, such as room for more userpics, improved energy efficiency, and, of course, cool new servers.

That was my biggest disappointment really :(

When I joined's mailing list I realised how peeps used lj in entirely different and contradictory days. An idea suggested by one person would get shot down by someone else because they did things differently and so it was incredibly hard to reach a consensus on new features/options. I think LJ has long since realised that they're not going to please everyone and made a decision and stuck to it.
What I think they should have done, if they really wanted to at least attempt to find a majority to please, is put forth some better way to poll their consumers. The only people who are going to comment on these posts where they go about things backwards/seemingly ignore the dissenters are: a} the ones who are insanely unhappy with the changes and spam accordingly, b} the ones who think "lol the complainers need to stfu b/c change is good and since I like it obviously that's what really matters" and c} the people who are actually trying to give good concrit that gets lost in the sea of a} and b}, and you know what? I wouldn't believe that they were actually reading all those comments, because I won't even read all those comments for the lulz. And I love the lulz.
