Entry Tracking on LJ

I've been using entry tracking as a version of RSS feeds for LJ - which has greatly reduced the strain on my feedreader :) It also lets me just track entries with a certain tag - like for icons only, or a particular fic tag.

    Question! Because this has made me curiousss. How does tracking work, exactly? I've never tried it personally, and really never heard anyone talk about it until now. Once you 'track' something, where does it show up? Obviously it seems different than just having stuff show up on your friends (or filtered) lists.

    I'd been wanting to do this for months but only finally got to it today XD There's really no need for entry!tracking to be private on LJ - in a way I wish it were public ^^

    Okay, this is nifty specially if I want to check new updates on fics for comms.

    Question Time:

    1) Do I need to watch/join a comm to be able to track something? Or can I just track without?

    and 2) This is a dumb one but how do I track? I get RSS but I rarely use that. TAT

    1) You only need to join if the comm's posts are members only or friend if a lj is friends-locked.

    For comms, you can first join, then track the posts you want and then use the ban_set command at the admin console to hide the comm from your member of-list.

    2) Where the links for "comment", "add to memories" etc. are located, there's another link called "track" or maybe "subscribe" - this lets you track post, comments or even when someone uploads a new userpic :) It automatically checks "email notification" which I usually UNcheck immediately XD

    So where before I used to have a dozen comms on RSS feeds, now I just add them to entry!tracking :) My feedreader is for stuff off of lj.

    (( Off topic: Am considering making two new public filters too: one for non-lj feeds (like smashing magazine) and one for tumblr rss feeds. I just need to make syndicated feeds for them and then add them to custom friends group ^_^ ))

    Wasn't there a limit on how much tracking you could do at once, at one point? I seem to remember there being one... or, I hope I remember that, since it's what's kept me from doing this very thing all this time.

    Free accounts have only 25, and Plus have 200.

    Paid and permanent though have 1000 XD I'm nowhere NEAR the limit so not worried \o\o/o/

    I just came along and now I'm curious. Does this list mean that you keep track of your f'list via those track notifications in your LJ inbox?

    I keep track of people not on my flist via entry!tracking usually -its an alternative to rss feeds and the flistt, at least for me.
