I was kind of psyched to get the book - I mean, it's actually IN MY HANDS. And I planned to stay up and go through it. But. I've read it already. The book's pretty awesome - first half has great potential, the second half somewhat delivers on that and the epilogue I will always look back on with fond distaste. And since I've wrapped my head around the canon, I can go to sleep without feeling all weird.
I actually want to read comments and discuss the book - meta would be lovely. But I'm guessing that'll only happen tomorrow. So.
Will go to sleep in a bit, wake up and jump into the squee - and rants.
Oh! I will say a few things though, since I've been dying to yell about them for a while now...
*copies and pastes all those thoughts that ended up on notepad*
SCORPBUS FTW. Now that the WTF-ness of the epilogue has died down for me somewhat - I can look back and grin at my new, cracky ship. Someone post some fic about those two kids, NOW. It's so awful, it's fun.
The Taboo - The Thursday Next series anyone? I mean seriously, Acheron Hades.
The effect of the locket - so obviously, LOTR. I kept comparing Frodo and Sam and Harry and Ron.
Kreacher totally pwned - knew I liked him for a reason. I never thought I'd see the day where Grimmauld Place would be clean though.
Twelve Fail Safe Ways to Charm Witches - it must have been written by Slytherins XD
Babbitty Rabbitty and her Cackling Stump? WTFOMGROFL.
The way Luna can figure out Harry's identity simply from his expression pwns EVERYTHING.
Dobby - was I one of the only people who *didn't* really find his death so horrible? It kind of made me go "meh".
There were several scenes that seemed to be straight from a HORROR FILM. I mean, the snake coming out of the neck, the throne made of dead bodies etc. Deathly Hollows as a film could get a Mature audience rating.
Draco not having a wand and being unwilling to even bother stealing one kind of made me deppressed. There was a complete lack of any defense in any form. I wanted to go up to him, shake him and yell "Dude, you're a wizard - ACT LIKE ONE"
Hated the way JKR wrote that the Malfoys just sat there at the end and everyone ignored them. IMO, it was more like they were in shock (at realizing it was over, and they survived).
I couldn't help thinking - this was the big event for Harry - and everyone was in this major War where the fate of the world was being decided...but for the Malfoys it wasn't really more than just the family surviving. In fact, if there were any characters that symbolised family, the Malfoys would be it for me - even the Weasleys were far more war oriented in terms of good vs. evil - the Malfoys just wanted to make it through.
JKR keeps trying to drive in the point that Draco is a child - events in the last books hit him hard and he begins changing but...it's kind of obvious he's still in that in between place, he knows by the end of HBP he cannot kill, but in DH, he still hasn't reached a solution to how to survive a war in that case.
It's obvious Draco didn't want to do anything that could lead to people dying - especially Harry who was probably the only way to escape death at Voldie's hands.
I was shocked by Crabbe and Goyle's turning on him - I'm thinking most people will think of DH as a Malfoy pity party - they kept getting stepped on. For me though, this was Harry's book and The End of the War - the Malfoys survived and might not even end up in Azkaban - so their day is coming Plus, there's Lucius' estate which is worth ober 1 billion *remembers the article in the Times* Ah, fanfiction me want. DH-compliant.
When you have Harry, the Chosen One, others tend to pale in comparison - they also tend to fall into two categories, his supporters or his enemies. There are very few who fall through the cracks - like Draco and Snape...which makes them that much harder to cliche!stamp...
The book was a final curtain call where every character got a bit of screentime and do a bow out (even if it wasn't in person *pities Colin*)
The book felt kinda crazy and all over the place but that's JKR and the need to get everybody into the story. And you have to give JKR props - at one point my mind went "Dumbledore is SUCH a dick," which I never thought would happen. She humanized Albus, my god.
JKR: Harry using Unforgivables? No love.
I noticed all the slash got joshed by the time the epilogue rolls in - everyone's married or dead. And the receding hairline was such a f*ck you to Draco enthusiasts everywhere (perhaps particular to those who JKR thinks use Tom Felton as a role model >__>). Have now begun using Sark (Alias) as my idea of Adult!Draco...
Still there was subtext - that nod at the end between Harry and Draco now makes me think they're having an affair XD
Even before the epilogue, stuff was getting a bit too...neat? As in good vanquishing evil and Bellatrix dying at the hands of Mrs. fucking Weasley. Color me unimpressed. In that sense, I'm ever willing to read Book 7 AUs in future.
I still stand by the idea that it's easier to become evil sheep like Crabbe and Goyle than it is to stand there, yelling at your friends to stop firing when you have no weapons yourself.
Ok, that's about it on random thoughts and squee.
